25 Malvern Joggers took part in the 60th anniversary of this gruelling 6.7 mile race organised by Worcester Athletic Club. The event started in Rose Bank Gardens, a short walk from Race HQ at the St. John Ambulance Hall. The route exits Rose Bank Gardens before a short section on road up Foley Terrace before turning left and off road towards St. Ann’s Well which the runners pass 3 times in total. Competitors then run to the Gold Mine before the long ascent to the Worcestershire Beacon and then a fast descent to West Malvern, then up and around North Hill before the final downhill section back to Rose Bank Gardens and the finish.
The route had a maximum altitude of 1395ft with magnificent views on this lovely day over Worcestershire and Herefordshire towards Wales. The course was run on tarmac, loose gravel paths and turf and was very demanding with steep ascents and descents.
The first local lady to finish was Debbie Russell in a time of 1:02:53 of Malvern Joggers. Malvern Joggers were led home by Henry Walker (52:12), followed by Sam Burnage (52:13), Adam Grant (52:44), Steve Beldon (54:35), Stuart Day (57:37), Ben Toon (58:41). Trevor Matty (59:31), John Bryan (1:02:02), Julie Mitchell (1:03:24), Mark Seyler (1:03:38), Steve Roode (1:04:05), Mark Cooling (1:05:54), Bert Lacey (1:05:57), Andrew Gallagher (1:06:46), Julie Caseley (1:07:03), Steve Ollis (1:07:36), Catherine James (1:09:37), Alison Priest (1:10:28), Brian Henderson (1:10:39), Mike Anstey (1:10:49), Rachel Cashmore (1:12:36), Lucy Gallagher (1:13:16), Lynda Broadway (1:18:33) and Charly Lowndes (1:28:16).
All runners received a momento for finishing and tea/coffee and homemade cakes back at Race HQ.
While many Joggers were competing in the Cross Country event, 35 took part in the curious mix of guesswork, cunning and self-awareness that is the annual handicap race. The idea is for pairs to finish as close as possible to a combined predicted time, over the undulatingly specialised distance of 2.69 miles. No watches allowed, of course. The start and finish was at the Swinyard car park. Conditions were perfect – a cool, sunny evening.
We welcomed three new runners – Dawn Griffiths, Simon Battson and Adam Townsend, who was the fastest runner (17:29) , a pace of around 6:30/mile. Sara Saunders was fastest female (21:54).
The best match against their estimate was the team of Arthur Lockyear and John Roe (23 secs faster). In second place were Ray Miles and Sarah Saunders (47s) and third were Sheila Sheringham and Jane Ridgely (1 min). The wooden spoon went to pessimists Carl Flint and Mark Gent, who finished 11:46 ahead of their prediction.

On a humid mid summers day, 33 Malvern Joggers ran the Malvern Half Marathon incorporating the Worcestershire County Championships. The start of all three Acorns Triple Run events, the Half Marathon, the 5k Woodland Trail and the 1k Fun Run, began at the same time at the Three Counties Showground and finished under the same arch.
The half marathon course was run mostly on quiet country lanes and was gently undulating through the Worcestershire countryside between the Malvern Hills and the River Severn. There was one climb from the road junction at 1.5 miles to Hook Bank then the route took runners to Clive’s Fruit Farm, onto the Hanley Road, through Hanley Castle, left into Hangman’s Lane, joining the Hanley Swan road for 2 miles into Hanley Swan. The route then went through the Blackmore Park Industrial estate for 2 miles before emerging on Blackmore Park Road for the last mile to the traffic lights with a switchback into the Three Counties Showground and the finish.
Malvern Joggers were led home by Henry Walker in 6th place in a time of 1:22:35. Jon Newey was 9th overall in a time of 1:23:39 and won the 3rd MV40 trophy.
