Darrens Dash – 6 June 2015

Darrens Dash is a popular, challenging, scenic hill race of approximately 6 miles organised by Wye Valley Runners that takes place from the village of Longtown, Herefordshire, on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the event with anniversary t-shirts being given to the first 100 entrants.  The event is now on aSaturday afternoon and there was a new course this year which crossed the border into Wales for the first time.  As well as the usual category prizes, there was also a local runners category, a Canicross category and, for the first time, a team category.

Runners started from the village of Longtown on a lovely but windy summers day and climbed through farmland, tracks, paths and open country up to Hatterall Ridge which dominates the skyline and marks the border between England and Wales.  The route then crossed into Wales and started a steady climb to the summit of the ridge marked with a Trig Point at 552m.  This was the start of the swift descent along Offa’s Dyke path until a sharp left turn and a few rock steps brought the runners back to the Olchan Valley and the return leg that re-traced the ascent route with an uphill run to the finish.

The first Malvern Jogger home was Andrew Milton in a time of 57:53, followed by Julie Caseley (1:02:03), Mike Anstey (1:08:13), Chris Jolley (1:08:14), Amanda Duncan (1:14:00) and Lynda Broadway (1:19:07).
